Build your own acoustic electric guitar with this ST-style hollow body DIY guitar kit, designed for builders who want acoustic warmth, electric versatility, and full customization. This kit features a hollow body with a solid block under the bridge, offering enhanced sustain and feedback control while preserving natural acoustic resonance. The bridge arrives pinless with its string holes drilled and its position scaled at the factory, so the hardest part of an acoustic build is already done for you.

Updated kit, easier to build

We changed this kit so a first-time builder can finish it.

  • No soldering. The electronics arrive pre-wired with plug-in connectors.
  • Bolt-on neck. Four screws and a neck plate, no glue-up and no clamping time.
  • Pre-drilled pinless bridge. String holes already drilled and the position scaled at the factory, so you are not measuring intonation or drilling the bridge yourself.

One part to take your time over: the veneer top

The flame maple top is a thin sheet of real wood, so sand it lightly by hand and go easy at the edges. A stain and clear coat shows the flame best: see Guitar Finishing 101 and How do you stain a veneer?, then a sunburst once you are comfortable. If the top does not come out the way you hoped, paint it: a solid color covers any sand-through. That is the finish in our own build, step by step in the assembly manual.

Since this is a pre-wired kit, no soldering is required. Depending on the finish and build you have in mind, you may need:

  • For assembly: Phillips screwdriver, power drill for pilot holes, wood glue and clamps for the bridge, masking tape, and fishing wire (or stiff coated wire) to route the jack cable through the body
  • For finishing: Sandpaper, your choice of stain, paint, or oil finish, plus a paintbrush, rags, gloves, denatured alcohol, and steel wool
  • For setup: Steel ruler for measuring scale length and action, and a 9-volt battery for the EQ (not included)

Whether you plan to stain, paint, or oil finish your guitar, this kit ships unfinished so you have complete control over the final result.

Soldering 101

Do I need to solder electronics? No.

This kit ships with the electronics already terminated. Every part arrives with its lead and connector fitted, so you plug them together, route the leads inside the body and close the cover. No iron, no solder.

Everything else about the build is unchanged: you still shape, sand, finish and set up the guitar yourself.

How your electronics connect

piezo pickup, 1 volume, 4-band equalizer

No soldering does not mean no wiring. There is still an order to connect things in, and the diagram shows every connection in this kit.

See the wiring diagram for this kit. That is the community thread for this exact layout, so you can ask about your build there and get an answer against a photo of your own cavity.

Just want the file? Download the diagram.

If a connector does not seem to fit, or you are unsure which lead goes where, send us your order number with a photo of the cavity and we will talk you through it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the neck glued in or screwed on?

The neck screws on. Screws go through the back of the body into the neck. You do not need glue or clamps.

Is the body hollow?

Yes. The body is hollowed out inside and has one soundhole on the top. The top has a thin flamed maple veneer.

How do I pick the right kit for me?

Take our quick kit quiz. It matches you to a kit based on your style and skill level. Every kit on our site also shows a difficulty score, so you can quickly see what fits your experience. Still unsure? Contact our Builder Success Team and we'll recommend one.

Can I swap the pickups, tuners, or other hardware?

Yes. Most of our kits use standard sizing for body cavities, mounting holes, and hardware, so aftermarket pickups from brands like Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, or EMG fit right in. Same goes for tuners, bridges, and nuts. Many of our builders play the kit as-is and love it, while others enjoy swapping in their favorite parts to personalize the sound and feel. That's the beauty of building your own, you can make it exactly how you want it.

Do you sell DIY guitar kit parts separately?

No, at the moment, we don't sell guitar kit parts (bodies, necks, hardware, etc.) separately.

How long does it take to build?

Build time depends on the kit and on you, so every kit page shows a difficulty rating to help you pick one that fits your experience. The biggest variable is the finish: an oil or stain is ready in days, while lacquer or polyurethane can take from one week to three months to fully cure.

What finishing options can I use on my guitar?

You can use stain, paint, or oil-based finishes. Learn more about finishing techniques here.

Our advice: use a reference. In most cases, this will be a guitar you particularly like the look of and want to create something similar.

Safety note: rags used with an oil finish give off heat as they cure and can catch fire if left in a pile. Lay them flat to dry outdoors, or soak them in water, before you throw them away.

How do I care for the wood before I finish it?

Your kit is real wood with no finish yet, so it takes in and lets out moisture from the air. That can make the neck or body move a little.

Open the box in the room where you will build. Let the parts rest there for 2 days before you start. Keep the room at 40 to 60% humidity. Keep the kit away from heaters, air vents, damp basements and hot cars.

Your finish seals the wood and slows moisture changes, so finish it soon after you sand.

Check the neck when your kit arrives. If anything looks off, email us a photo and we will help. Read more about wood and humidity.

How long does shipping take, and do you ship internationally?

We ship to over 100 countries, and every order ships with a tracking number. Free shipping is available on U.S. orders and on many international kits: eligible free-shipping options appear at checkout for your location. Delivery time depends on which warehouse fulfills your kit, shown on the product page. In-stock kits from our U.S. warehouse usually arrive in 3 to 8 business days, a little longer around holidays, or worldwide from our international warehouse in 2 to 6 weeks. Pre-order and Custom Shop kits take longer (pre-orders about 3 to 6 months, Custom Shop about 8 months), with the timeline shown on the product page. If your order ships to a U.S. address, you pay no customs duties or import taxes, whether your kit ships from our U.S. warehouse or our international warehouse. Orders to other countries may be subject to customs duties or import taxes set by your country, which are the buyer's responsibility. See our Shipping Policy for details.
