Build your own acoustic electric guitar with this TE-style hollow body DIY kit, designed to deliver warm acoustic resonance with added clarity and control when plugged in. Featuring a hollow body with a solid block under the bridge, this kit balances natural acoustic tone with improved sustain and reduced feedback, making it ideal for both stage and studio use. The bridge arrives pinless with its string holes drilled and its position scaled at the factory, so the hardest part of an acoustic build is already done for you.

Updated kit, easier to build

We changed this kit so a first-time builder can finish it.

  • No soldering. The electronics arrive pre-wired with plug-in connectors.
  • Bolt-on neck. Four screws and a neck plate, no glue-up and no clamping time.
  • Pre-drilled pinless bridge. String holes already drilled and the position scaled at the factory, so you are not measuring intonation or drilling the bridge yourself.

One part to take your time over: the veneer top

The flamed maple top is a thin sheet of real wood, and it is easy to sand through. Keep the sanding light, work by hand rather than with a power sander, and go carefully at the edges where the veneer is thinnest.

The easiest way to show off the flame is a stain and clear coat. The stain sinks into the figure and makes it jump, and you are not trying to build a thick, level color coat over it. Our guides walk through it step by step:

And if the veneer does not come out the way you hoped, paint it. A solid color finish covers the top completely, so a sand-through or an uneven patch simply disappears underneath it. That is the finish used in our own build for this kit, and every step of it is in the assembly manual. Nothing about the veneer is a build you can ruin.

What You'll Need

Since this is a pre-wired kit, no soldering is required. Depending on the finish and build you have in mind, you may need:

  • For assembly: Phillips screwdriver, power drill for pilot holes, wood glue and clamps for the bridge, masking tape, and fishing wire (or stiff coated wire) to route the jack cable through the body
  • For finishing: Sandpaper, your choice of stain, paint, or oil finish, plus a paintbrush, rags, gloves, denatured alcohol, and steel wool
  • For setup: Steel ruler for measuring scale length and action, and a 9-volt battery for the EQ (not included)

Soldering 101

Do I need to solder electronics? No.

This kit ships with the electronics already terminated. Every part arrives with its lead and connector fitted, so you plug them together, route the leads inside the body and close the cover. No iron, no solder.

Everything else about the build is unchanged: you still shape, sand, finish and set up the guitar yourself.

How your electronics connect

No soldering does not mean no wiring. There is still an order to connect things in, and the diagram shows every connection in this kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tools do I need to build a kit guitar?

Depending on the type of guitar you buy you may only require tools and materials for finishing the guitar (painting) and soldering.

Screwdrivers, sandpaper and sanding block. Finishing supplies e.g. paint, stain, and clear gloss, ventilation mask, coping saw or jigsaw if shaping the headstock.

With this small list of inexpensive tools, you will be up and running and ready to build your electric guitar in no time.

Does the kit include everything to build a working guitar?

Our stock kits contain all necessary parts (unless stated otherwise on the product page).

How long does it take to complete a guitar kit?

It depends on the choice of finish. For instance, when you paint or stain a guitar you will need the surface to dry and harden (cure). This can take anywhere from 1 week to 3 months depending on your choice of finishing product.

You will find the guitar dries to approximately 90% very quickly but the final 10% takes some time. If you can't wait that long you could try tung oil or wax finish but bear in mind the finish won't be as durable and protect the guitar as effectively.

Do I have to solder the electronics?

Most of our kits require basic soldering. If you're new to it, check out our wiring guide here.

If you don't want to solder, or don't have the tools, our solderless guitar kits use plug-and-play wiring. No iron required.

What finishing options can I use on my guitar?

You can use stain, paint, or oil-based finishes. Learn more about finishing techniques here.

Our advice: use a reference. In most cases, this will be a guitar you particularly like the look of and want to create something similar.

Safety note: rags used with an oil finish give off heat as they cure and can catch fire if left in a pile. Lay them flat to dry outdoors, or soak them in water, before you throw them away.
