What Makes This Kit Different

A spalted maple top and two humbuckers on a thin semi-hollow ash body. Spalted maple is pale maple marked with dark natural lines, and every sheet is different, so no two of these tops look alike. The veneer is glued to the top of a chambered ash body with one f-hole and a black binding line around the top edge. Two chrome-covered humbuckers sit in a large white pearl pickguard, in place of the two single-coils on our two single-coil spalted maple semi-hollow kit.

Around that body: a bolt-on maple neck with a maple fretboard and black dot inlays, 21 frets with rounded fret ends, a chrome six-saddle hardtail bridge with the strings loaded through the back of the body, chrome sealed tuners and a pre-assembled volume, tone and 3-way blade switch harness.

Soldering 101

Do I need to solder electronics? Yes.

You wire the pickups, the controls and the output jack yourself. Every connection is a wire onto a lug, all of them inside one cavity, and you can redo any of them. Soldering is a skill you pick up in an afternoon, not a trade you need to have already.

What you will be wiring

2 humbuckers, 1 volume, 1 tone, 3-way switch

See the wiring diagram for this kit. That is the community thread for this exact layout, so you can ask about your build there and get an answer against a photo of your own cavity.

Just want the file? Download the diagram.

What you need

A soldering iron, rosin-core solder and wire cutters. None of it is specialist equipment and none of it is included in the kit.

Never soldered before?

Start with our guide to guitar electronics. It covers what each component does and how to make a joint that holds. If a joint fails you can heat it and redo it. Nothing in the electronics is single use.

If your kit does not match the diagram

It happens. Kits vary slightly between production runs in wire colours and occasionally in components, which can make a general diagram confusing. You are not misreading it.

Send us your order number with a close-up of the wiring harness and a wider shot of the whole control cavity, and our wiring technician will send you the correct diagram for your kit or draw one for it.

Would rather not solder at all? See the kits that arrive wired.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is spalted maple?

Spalted maple is maple marked with dark lines left by natural fungus in the wood before it was dried. On this kit it is a thin veneer glued over the top of the ash body, so every top has its own pattern.

How is it different from your other semi-hollow single-cutaway kits?

It pairs the spalted maple top with two humbuckers and a white pearl pickguard. Our spalted maple semi-hollow kit with two single-coils has the same top with a different pickup layout, and the ash semi-hollow kit with a zebrawood look veneer has two humbuckers under a different top.

How hard is it to build?

It is rated Intermediate, 6 out of 10. The thin spalted maple veneer needs a light touch when sanding, the open-grain ash wants grain filler before finishing, and the two humbuckers have to be soldered to the pre-assembled harness. See how we score build difficulty.

What scale length and how many frets does it have?

The bolt-on maple neck has a 25.5 inch (648 mm) scale, a maple fretboard and 21 frets with rounded fret ends. It is a right-handed, full-size six-string.

How do I pick the right kit for me?

Take our quick kit quiz. It matches you to a kit based on your style and skill level. Every kit on our site also shows a difficulty score, so you can quickly see what fits your experience. Still unsure? Contact our Builder Success Team and we'll recommend one.

Can I swap the pickups, tuners, or other hardware?

Yes. Most of our kits use standard sizing for body cavities, mounting holes, and hardware, so aftermarket pickups from brands like Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, or EMG fit right in. Same goes for tuners, bridges, and nuts. Many of our builders play the kit as-is and love it, while others enjoy swapping in their favorite parts to personalize the sound and feel. That's the beauty of building your own, you can make it exactly how you want it.

Do you sell DIY guitar kit parts separately?

No, at the moment, we don't sell guitar kit parts (bodies, necks, hardware, etc.) separately.

How long does it take to build?

Build time depends on the kit and on you, so every kit page shows a difficulty rating to help you pick one that fits your experience. The biggest variable is the finish: an oil or stain is ready in days, while lacquer or polyurethane can take from one week to three months to fully cure.

What finishing options can I use on my guitar?

You can use stain, paint, or oil-based finishes. Learn more about finishing techniques here.

Our advice: use a reference. In most cases, this will be a guitar you particularly like the look of and want to create something similar.

Safety note: rags used with an oil finish give off heat as they cure and can catch fire if left in a pile. Lay them flat to dry outdoors, or soak them in water, before you throw them away.

How long does shipping take, and do you ship internationally?

We ship to over 100 countries, and every order ships with a tracking number. Free shipping is available on U.S. orders and on many international kits: eligible free-shipping options appear at checkout for your location. Delivery time depends on which warehouse fulfills your kit, shown on the product page. In-stock kits typically arrive within the U.S. in 1 to 2 weeks, or worldwide from our international warehouse in 2 to 6 weeks. Pre-order and Custom Shop kits take longer (pre-orders about 3 to 6 months, Custom Shop about 8 months), with the timeline shown on the product page. If your order ships to a U.S. address, you pay no customs duties or import taxes, whether your kit ships from our U.S. warehouse or our international warehouse. Orders to other countries may be subject to customs duties or import taxes set by your country, which are the buyer's responsibility. See our Shipping Policy for details.
