A skunk-stripe maple neck with a bound rosewood fretboard, on a solid mahogany offset body. The skunk stripe is the dark strip down the back of the neck. It covers the slot for the truss rod, so the fretboard face stays one clean piece. Ivory binding runs along both edges of the fretboard, with the side dots set into it. The frets are in and the headstock is drilled.

The ivory pickguard holds the full rhythm and lead circuit. The slide switch, the 3-way toggle and the rhythm controls are already mounted. You solder in the two P90 pickups. The 24 in (610 mm) scale is shorter than a 25.5 in neck, so the frets sit closer together. There are 21 stainless-steel frets with dot inlays. A six-saddle bridge pairs with a chrome floating vibrato. The tuners are sealed and the hardware is chrome. The mahogany body has no veneer, so it is ready for any stain, paint or clear coat.

Soldering 101

Do I need to solder electronics? Yes.

You wire the pickups, the controls and the output jack yourself. Every connection is a wire onto a lug, all of them inside one cavity, and you can redo any of them. Soldering is a skill you pick up in an afternoon, not a trade you need to have already.

Find the diagram for your kit

We publish a diagram for every pickup and control layout we sell. Match yours by pickup type and by how many volume and tone knobs your kit has. If you cannot tell which is yours, post your SKU on the index and we will point you to the right one.

Find your wiring diagram. You can also browse every diagram thread, or download them from our wiring diagram library.

What you need

A soldering iron, rosin-core solder and wire cutters. None of it is specialist equipment and none of it is included in the kit.

Never soldered before?

Start with our guide to guitar electronics. It covers what each component does and how to make a joint that holds. If a joint fails you can heat it and redo it. Nothing in the electronics is single use.

If your kit does not match the diagram

It happens. Kits vary slightly between production runs in wire colours and occasionally in components, which can make a general diagram confusing. You are not misreading it.

Send us your order number with a close-up of the wiring harness and a wider shot of the whole control cavity, and our wiring technician will send you the correct diagram for your kit or draw one for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a skunk stripe on a guitar neck?

It is the darker strip of wood running down the back of the maple neck. It fills the channel the truss rod was fitted through from behind, which lets the fretboard face stay one clean piece. On this kit the neck also has ivory binding along both edges of the rosewood fretboard.

What does the rhythm and lead circuit do?

The slide switch on the pickguard flips between two preset sounds. The lead circuit uses the main volume, tone and 3-way toggle; the rhythm circuit has its own volume and tone for the neck pickup. Every connection is shown in the offset rhythm and lead wiring diagram.

How hard is this kit to build?

It is rated Intermediate, 5 out of 10, on our build difficulty score. The floating vibrato needs careful setup, and the open-grain mahogany needs grain filler before finishing; every cavity and hole is pre-cut.

What is the scale length?

24 in (610 mm), shorter than the common 25.5 in scale, so the reach between frets is shorter. It has 21 stainless-steel frets on a 14 in radius rosewood fretboard.

How do I pick the right kit for me?

Take our quick kit quiz. It matches you to a kit based on your style and skill level. Every kit on our site also shows a difficulty score, so you can quickly see what fits your experience. Still unsure? Contact our Builder Success Team and we'll recommend one.

Can I swap the pickups, tuners, or other hardware?

Yes. Most of our kits use standard sizing for body cavities, mounting holes, and hardware, so aftermarket pickups from brands like Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, or EMG fit right in. Same goes for tuners, bridges, and nuts. Many of our builders play the kit as-is and love it, while others enjoy swapping in their favorite parts to personalize the sound and feel. That's the beauty of building your own, you can make it exactly how you want it.

Do you sell DIY guitar kit parts separately?

No, at the moment, we don't sell guitar kit parts (bodies, necks, hardware, etc.) separately.

How long does it take to build?

Build time depends on the kit and on you, so every kit page shows a difficulty rating to help you pick one that fits your experience. The biggest variable is the finish: an oil or stain is ready in days, while lacquer or polyurethane can take from one week to three months to fully cure.

What finishing options can I use on my guitar?

You can use stain, paint, or oil-based finishes. Learn more about finishing techniques here.

Our advice: use a reference. In most cases, this will be a guitar you particularly like the look of and want to create something similar.

Safety note: rags used with an oil finish give off heat as they cure and can catch fire if left in a pile. Lay them flat to dry outdoors, or soak them in water, before you throw them away.

How long does shipping take, and do you ship internationally?

We ship to over 100 countries, and every order ships with a tracking number. Free shipping is available on U.S. orders and on many international kits: eligible free-shipping options appear at checkout for your location. Delivery time depends on which warehouse fulfills your kit, shown on the product page. In-stock kits from our U.S. warehouse usually arrive in 3 to 8 business days, a little longer around holidays, or worldwide from our international warehouse in 2 to 6 weeks. Pre-order and Custom Shop kits take longer (pre-orders about 3 to 6 months, Custom Shop about 8 months), with the timeline shown on the product page. If your order ships to a U.S. address, you pay no customs duties or import taxes, whether your kit ships from our U.S. warehouse or our international warehouse. Orders to other countries may be subject to customs duties or import taxes set by your country, which are the buyer's responsibility. See our Shipping Policy for details.
