STEM guitar kits for classrooms and independent builders
A guitar kit is a complete set of guitar parts, unassembled, that one student turns into a playable instrument. Building one covers four subjects at once: the physics of standing waves and electromagnetic induction, the mathematics of fret spacing, the engineering of a load-bearing neck joint, and the technology of a wired signal path.
There are more than 130 kits in this collection across more than 40 body styles. Every kit carries a published skill score from 1 to 10, so you can match the build to the class. Skill 1 to 3 suits middle school and first-time builders, and low-solder options remove the soldering iron entirely. Skill 4 to 6 suits high school students who are comfortable with hand tools. Skill 7 to 10 suits university and career-technical shops, including blank bodies that students shape themselves.
A typical class build takes 8 to 12 hours over 2 to 4 weeks, plus drying time for the finish. Schools including Southern Arkansas University, Michigan Technological University, Comstock Public Schools, and Calloway County Schools have run builds with these kits.
