Electric Guitar Kits

Build your own electric guitar with our complete DIY kits. Every kit includes a pre-shaped body, carved neck, tuning machines, bridge, pickups, and all the wiring you need. Choose from over 200 electric guitar kits in single cutaway, double cutaway, offset, V-shape, angular, semi-hollow, and headless body styles.

What Comes in an Electric Guitar Kit?

Each kit ships with the body, neck, fretboard (pre-fretted and inlaid), tuning machines, bridge and tailpiece, pickups, wiring harness, knobs, and all mounting hardware. You supply the finish, soldering iron, and a few hand tools. Most builders complete their first kit in a weekend.

Which Electric Guitar Kit Should I Build First?

If this is your first build, start with a bolt-on neck kit in a solid body style. These are the most forgiving to assemble because the neck attaches with screws rather than glue, giving you room to adjust the fit. Double cutaway and single cutaway S-style or T-style kits are the most popular starter builds because of their straightforward wiring (typically one or two pickups with a simple switching layout).

What Will I Learn?

Building an electric guitar teaches you real skills: wood finishing techniques, soldering and basic electronics, pickup wiring and signal flow, fretwork and action setup, and intonation adjustment. Universities including Michigan Tech and Stony Brook use guitar building to teach applied physics, acoustics, and materials science. Every kit is a hands-on STEM project that produces a playable instrument.

Electric Guitar Kit Categories

Browse by body style to find the right kit for your build. We carry single cutaway (classic rock and blues tone), double cutaway (versatile, comfortable upper fret access), semi-hollow (warm jazz and blues resonance), offset (ergonomic, indie and alternative), V-shape and angular (bold stage presence), headless (lightweight, modern), 7-string and 8-string (extended range), and bass guitar kits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tools do I need to build an electric guitar kit?

A soldering iron, screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead), hex keys (included with most kits), sandpaper (220 through 600 grit), wood finish of your choice, and wire cutters. No power tools or woodworking equipment required.

How long does it take to build an electric guitar kit?

Most builders finish assembly in 6 to 10 hours spread over a weekend. The finishing process (staining, painting, or oiling) adds 3 to 7 days of drying time depending on your chosen method.

Do I need experience to build an electric guitar kit?

No prior experience is needed. Every kit includes a step-by-step assembly manual with photos. The body and neck arrive pre-shaped and pre-drilled, so you are assembling and finishing rather than cutting or carving wood.

Can I customize the pickups and hardware in my kit?

Yes. The kits ship with stock pickups and hardware that work well out of the box. You can swap in aftermarket pickups, locking tuners, or upgraded bridges at any time during or after the build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tools do I need to build a kit guitar?

Depending on the type of guitar you buy you may only require tools and materials for finishing the guitar (painting) and soldering.

Screwdrivers, sandpaper and sanding block. Finishing supplies e.g. paint, stain, and clear gloss, ventilation mask, coping saw or jigsaw if shaping the headstock.

With this small list of inexpensive tools, you will be up and running and ready to build your electric guitar in no time.

Does the kit include everything to build a working guitar?

Our stock kits contain all necessary parts (unless stated otherwise on the product page).

How long does it take to complete a guitar kit?

It depends on the choice of finish. For instance, when you paint or stain a guitar you will need the surface to dry and harden (cure). This can take anywhere from 1 week to 3 months depending on your choice of finishing product.

You will find the guitar dries to approximately 90% very quickly but the final 10% takes some time. If you can't wait that long you could try tung oil or wax finish but bear in mind the finish won't be as durable and protect the guitar as effectively.

Do I have to solder the electronics?

Most of our kits require basic soldering. If you're new to it, check out our wiring guide here.

If you don't want to solder, or don't have the tools, our solderless guitar kits use plug-and-play wiring. No iron required.

What finishing options can I use on my guitar?

You can use stain, paint, or oil-based finishes. Learn more about finishing techniques here.

Our advice: use a reference. In most cases, this will be a guitar you particularly like the look of and want to create something similar.

How good will my finished kit guitar sound?

It's defined firstly by the components you use and secondly the workmanship that goes into putting it all together.
